The Swim + Dive Hornets had about the best day that Coach Brunty could have hoped for.  As I type this, the divers are competing so I will try to get something out later on Twitter about the divers.  But here is what they accomplished today.

The 200MR went in seeded at 1:41.57.  Coach Loveland & Coach Brunty thought that 1:39.00-1:39.50 was in the cards.  That would have made them 14th or 15th and an important 6 or 8 points.  But a slow exchange here or a loss of focus there and 1:40.80 is the result and a 21st place.

In the 200 Free is where the Hornets began to turn it around.  Matt Sieffert and Jacob Ehrman led the team just as they have all year with Sieffert having a career day!  Sieffert went 1:42.99 and qualified 5th less than 1 second out of the top 3.  Ehrman went 1:43.35 and qualified 6th.  This event could score the Hornets 27 big points.

The 200IM is another event that Coach Brunty was expecting big things.  Freshman Daniel Keith went 1:58.76 and is in at #15.  Tomorrow Keith could get as high as 9th which is 9 points and 15th is 2 points.

Event 4 the 50 Free, Event 6 the 100 Fly and Event  7 the 100 Free the Hornets did not have anyone qualified.

Event 8 the 500 Free here come The Hornets.  Once again it was Sieffert and Ehrman.  Matt Sieffert (just off of the school record held by Andy Jensen at 4:37.xx) as he went 4:38.96 and is in the top 8 at #6.  #3 is in at 4:37.66 so tomorrow promises to be very tight.  Jacob Ehrman went 4:44.04 and is in at #13.  #9 is 4:42.32, easily within reach of Ehrman.

The 200 Free Relay shows that being good is good, but lucky and good is great!  The Hornets went 1:28.11 and by my calculations they were 9th, maybe 10th.  But oh no!  Livonia Stevenson at #2, Detroit Catholic Central at #4 and Grand Blanc at #8 were all DQ’ed due to illegal exchanges.  Hence, a swimmer left too soon.  So while #10 and a 1:28.11 would have been good, 1:28.11 and 7th is better.  That is a 10-12 point swing.  This relay consisted of Ryan Klemptner, Daniel Keith, Matt Sieffert and Jacob Ehrman.

Event 10 the 100 back the Hornets had 2 competitors but unfortunately were shut out.  Daniel Keith went 56.31 for 30th and Steven Rudnick went 56.97 for 39th.

Event 11 the 100 Breast Simon Rucinski had his best swim ever.  Rucinski went 1:00.56 and is in at #15.  The Breast is a very fast event this year as typically 1.flat would be 7th to 11th.  But it is very competitive this year.#9 is 59.09 so winning consols is within Simon’s grasp.

The last event, #12 the 400 Free Relay the quartet of Ehrman, Klemptner, Sieffert and keith went a season best of 3:12.89 which was a 5.77 second drop.  No DQ’s, straight up, the Hornets are #7.

*******THIS JUST IN*******

Diving prelims have concluded.  The Hornets have 2 divers competing.  Freshman Dakota Hurbis and Sophomore Alex Calder.  Currently Dakota is #2 with 307.05 points, only 3.6 points out of 1st!  Alex Calder is #4 with 275.35 points.  Spots 3-10 are tight, very tight.  Only 4.40 points separates 3-10.

Keep up with this tomorrow on@shshornetnews as I will be getting updates as they happen!
