The 2014 Saline Boys Varsity Golf Team once again has their sights set on competing for the State title. The last 3 years they have finished 10th, 7th and 5th respectively and would love to continue that trend upward. They also would like to repeat their strong District and Regional showing as they finished 2nd at Districts by one shot but then won the Regionals.
In SEC competition last season, the Hornets were undefeated in conference play but then had an off day at the Conference Championship and finished 2nd. “That is definitely always one of our season goals- to go undefeated and then win the Conference title, coach Debbie Williams-Hoak stated.
This year’s team has 8 seniors who have all been with the program for 4 years and are led by co-captains Alex Derksen and Tyler Jett. Coach Williams-Hoak is very happy to have senior Ian Martin back again as he was a 6th place finisher at the State Championship, an All-State selection and continues to be one of the best players in the state. He along with Alex Derksen and James Alcock competed in the State Championship last year and look to do so again this year. Additional seniors, Jay Banet, Andrew Birkle, Aaron Dauer and JJ Faeth have all improved tremendously during their 3 previous seasons and they look to compete in varsity tournaments for the Hornets this season.
3 new juniors, Owen Helber, Tyler Powell and Cal Mayer join the Hornet Golf Team this year and will also be competing for those varsity spots.
Some of our 9th and 10th graders are also very talented and they will have an opportunity to get some varsity experience as we build for the future. “ I know a few of them have their sights on being in that varsity starting line-up. Before the start of the season, we did not have any 11th graders that we knew were going to play so our plan is to get these younger guys some varsity experience because they will be our varsity players next year in addition to the 3 talented new juniors that joined the team.”
“I am very excited about our team this year. We expect to be competing to win everything we play in and we are going to use the weather situation as a positive and to our advantage- it will be fun.” Coach Debbie Williams-Hoak states. We had a chance to see the guys hit balls at Miles of Golf and it was very encouraging how well they were striking the ball- returning players and new players alike.
The JV team led by 3rd year coach Jared Falkowski will be strong this year as 6 – 9th graders and 12- 10th graders compete for spots on the team. “The new players coming in are talented and the returning players are much improved so the competition for spots and playing time will be very good. Also, some of those 10 graders want to compete on varsity, Coach Falkowski states.
