As The Hornet News continues to meet with the coaches and continues to get an idea of what to expect from each team, I must say I was excited to speak with Coach Scott Theisen about baseball.  This year’s varsity boys team will feature 6 seniors, 11 juniors and 3 sophomores.

Coach Theisen believes that this year’s team will be one of the best pitching staffs that he has had and for sure believes that this year’s staff will be one of the deepest.  The team has 2 athletes that have already signed to pitch at the next level.  Michael Hendrickson will be pitching at Michigan next year and Josh Smith who has signed to pitch for Kentucky.  Add to these two fabulous athletes Brett Nearing, Brendan Nearing, Matt Willis, Andrew Bennett-Belch and Bryan Homberg and you have a pitching staff for the ages.

Coach Thiesen firmly believes that the Hornets must do the little things on offense to win games.  Stealing a base; hit and run; bunting for a hit; bunting to move a runner up; or taking an extra base on a ball hit into a gap are things we specifically spoke about.  With the new bat certification that went into effect last year, he felt as though this year’s team would not be a team that would just mash extra base hits and home runs.

This year’s schedule will test the Hornets.  The Hornets have been invited to participate in the Midwest Classic at the brand new, state of the art, Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  This tournament will have the best teams in the Midwest and this tournament will be held April 4th and 5th.  As you get down towards the end of the year in districts and regionals, and each team is running their #1 starter or #2 starter at you, the Hornets will need to do be able to win the 2-1 or 3-2 games.  And this is what this schedule will prep them for.

The games will begin on March 26th at home as the Hornets will take on the Plymouth Salem Rocks.
