Game Recap

The Saline Hornets advanced to the final four at the State Championships in Hudsonville Friday night with a solid 14-3 victory over The West Ottawa Panthers.

Cassie Anderson led the offensive effort with seven goals. Maddy Murphy chipped in with four; Sam Fitch, Jen Green and Hope Smith had one each. The Hornets moved the ball as eight different players had assists in the game. Sam Fitch, Annika Olsen, Hope Smith, and Jen Green had two assists apiece; Lisa Gross, Eleanor Smith and Maddy Murphy had one each. Goalkeeper Katie Wagner contributed to the offensive attack with a couple long passes that led to goals, giving her two assists also.

On the defensive end, the Hornets’ aggressive press kept the Panthers off the board in the first half. Sam Fitch led the team with seven steals; fellow senio, Lisa Gross, had five; sophomore Annika Olsen had four; Anderson had three. Wagner, Murphy, Gillian Cain and Eleanor Smith had two steals each; Lauryn Kruse had one.

Katie Wagner made seven saves, including one on a 5-meter penalty shot, tocearn the win in goal.

The Hornets face Hudsonvillve in the semi-finals in Saturdajy morning at 11:45 at Hudsonville High School.

The Michigan Water Polo Association also announced its Academic All-State Team. Nine Hornets were recognized for their excellence in the classroom as well as in the pool: Cassie Anderson, Gillian Cain, Sam Fitch, Lisa Gross, Emily Huetteman, Maddy Murphy, Annika Olsen, Eleanor Smith and Hope Smith. Congratulations to these ladies for their hard work and dedication.
