This is a special week in regards to winter sports as the season has wound down. Essentially we were down to Championships and only those who really stand out against the best in the State would become the next “Athlete of the Week”.
On Saturday the 8th of March for the first time ever, a MHSAA State Swim + Dive Championships would be held at Saginaw Valley State University. The Hornets were not equipped with their usual All-American lineup and would look to younger athletes to carry the load; and here is where the @SHSHornetNews and @SalineAthletics would find this week’s “Athlete of the Week”.
Dakota Hurbis is only a freshman in age but his diving experience is already vast. He was second at the State Meet with a score of 433.25 finishing behind Jake Herremans (a senior) from Rockford. Dakota has been a staple all year and was an athlete that Coach Brunty (head swim coach) and Alex Gauvin (dive coach) could count on week in and week out.
Dakota Dives at Legacy Diving when not diving at Saline and Dakota further proves that year round training yields State Championship results. Dakota is always focused and scoring 433.25 points at a Championship, 11 dive meet, proves that the future is very bright in Event #5, Diving.
