Girls Junior Varsity Softball, Girls Varsity Softball · Varsity Softball: SEC CHAMPIONS!

DOUBLE HEADER SUMMARY

The Hornets invaded River Rat territory this afternoon needing a couple of wins.  Why?  Pretty simple, to become SEC Champions!  And a couple of wins thjey did.  Tonight the Hornets won utilizing all aspects of the game.  Hitting, small ball, long ball, taking an extra base, capitalizing on mistakes, walking, and being smart.  A team like this must be talented of course, but a team does not put it all together unless they are extremely well coached.  Head Coach Alicia Seegert and her assistant coach Chris DeFant have simply done an incredible job with this group of ladies.  Congratulations to the 2014 SEC Champions the Saline Hornets!

GAME #1   Saline 10  AA Huron 0

Ann Arbor Huron tried to implement a defense that would discourage the Hornets to hit the ball into their power alley to left.  Their right fielder played center field, the center fielder was in left center, the left fielder stood on the line and the second baseman played straight up the middle.  Just don’t tell the Hornets “Don’t do that!” because they simply blistered the ball into right field and the strategy back fired and in the second game it was abandoned.

On the hill, who was it?  You guessed it, Laura Vaccaro.  While not a “perfect” game and while it did not go 7 innings, it was still ANOTHER NO HITTER!!!  Laura struck out 5, walked 1 and the Hornets did commit 2 errors, but Huron did not score and the no hitter was in tact.  Through 6 innings she only threw 52 pitches (8.66/inning) and 41 for strikes .

Offensively the Hornets were led by:  Sam Bruley was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI; Laura Vaccaro was 2 for 4 with a HR and a double, 2 RBI and a run scored; Katie Alexander was 2 for 4 and a RBI; Alyssa Heren was 1 for 2, but scored twice and drove in 1.
