Friday night the Girls traveled to Dearborn for a rematch with the #1 ranked Mustangs of Northville. Saline had lost on the road on the home turf of the Mustangs a few weeks back. Northville had cruised to an undefeated season and other than the 1-0 victory over the Hornets they had crushed their competition. The Hornets had been to a Regional Final in the past but was looking to make program history by advancing through Regionals. The table was set for a great game.
And a great game it was.
The first half was scoreless and the by the end of the first half the Hornets were matching the Mustangs intensity and controled the last 5-7 minutes of the half. The reason for this is simple, Sofia Sweier. She made save after save in the first half and at times you had to look twice. As the second half began it was a continuation of the first half. Sweier was getting shelled in goal and she kept on answering the call. In the interim, Taylor Mulder had a great look at a goal off of a free kick and just missed and Amanda Zylstra had a fabulous steal and went coast to coast. Her shot was stopped but the Hornets did have their chances. Then the Hornets defense had a quick lapse of concentration and a great team such as Northville took advantage of it. Two offensive players had gotten free and the ball found the back of the net. Sofia did not stand a chance and that made the score 1-0.
The Hornets had a GREAT year. They lost 2 games by a combined 2-0 to the #1 reanked team in the State and #3 (some poles #2) in the Nation. They defeated Plymouth as well as Brighton. And, only gave up 2 goals all post season. Coach Restrick I know is incredibly proud of this group of young ladies.
