Saline High School
The Saline Hornets faced the Mason Bulldogs in the opening game of the Michigan Water Polo Association’s East Region Championships at Saline High School and went to work immediately. Cassie Anderson scored 15 seconds into the game to put the Hornets on the board first. Maddy Murphy scored 30 seconds later, assisted by Annika Olsen, and the Hornets never looked back, going on to win 16-3. Anderson had four goals in the first quarter, Murphy had four and Jen Green had two. Sam Fitch had four assists in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter the Hornets led 10-1.
The Hornets extended their lead in the second quarter with goals from Annika Olsen, Fitch, Murphy and two more from Green. Fitch added another goal in the 3rd quarter.
Katie Wagner and Alyssa Deal split time in goal.
Murphy finished with 5 goals, 3 assists and a steal. Anderson had four goals and five steals. Green contributed four goals, one assist and two steals. Fitch added two goals, one assist and three steals. Olsen had one goal, one assist and two steals. Lisa Gross had two steals, Gillian Cain had one steal, and Eleanor Smith had one steal.
With the win over Mason, the Hornets advance to the semi-finals of the MWPA East Region Championships and play Skyline (ranked #6 in the State) at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The other semi-final game features the #4 ranked Okemos Chiefs against the #5 ranked Huron River Rats. The winners of the semifinal games will play in the East Region championship game at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. Losers of the semi-final games will play at 2:00 p.m. By virtue of their wins on Friday evening, Saline, Skyline, Okemos and Huron will all advance to the State Championships in Hudsonville, MI on June 2 and 3.
