From the minute you meet the new Competitive Cheer and Football Sideline cheer coach, you know that there is something special about her.  Her resume’ and accolades speak for themselves, but just being next to a person that exudes success is a great thing.

Girls Junior Varsity Water Polo, Girls Varsity Water Polo · Varsity Girls Open Their Season

Coach Katie Card and her group of Varsity Water Polo Girls opened their season night against state powerhouse Ann Arbor Huron.  Huron which played at the East Grand Rapids Tournament last weekend came in with 4 games under their belt while this was the maiden voyage for the Hornets.  Saline started out slow and tentative which is to be expected but finished strong and defeated Huron by the score of 6-5.  Saline outscored Huron 3-1 in the final period.

The Hornets moved the ball around well and the six goals were scored by six different people.  Scoring for the Hornets were:  Emily McCullough; Abby Kowalczyk; Abbie Phelps; Ariana Brown; Sarah Noonan; and Gillian Gatecliff.  With the good passing that leads to assists and coaches love assists.  Ariana Brown had 1, Sarah Noonan and Hannah Lau had 2 each.

The Hornets did commit 17 turnovers and this will have to change if they want to make a deep run into the State Playoffs, but they did come up +3 on possessions.  On defense the Hornets were led by Sarah Noonan with 5 steals, Hannah Lau with 4 steals and Goalie Brynn Rohloff also had 4 steals.  Brynn Rohloff had 11 saves for a 68.8% save percentage which is very good.  With a 68.8% save percentage and 4 steals, that is great goalie play!

The Hornets are in action this weekend at the Ann Arbor Pioneer Tournament.  The Hornets will now face some of the other best teams in the state and it will be a good barometer to see where they are at.  They then return home next Wednesday the 26 to face All-American and Stanford bound Katie Dudley and the Okemos Chiefs.

Girls Junior Varsity Water Polo, Girls Varsity Water Polo · JV Girls Water Polo

The Girls JV Polo team opened their season last night against Ann Arbor Huron.  Saline has a lot of first year players who are learning the game and Huron’s experience showed.  Saline lost the game by the score of 9-4.

The Saline goals were scored by Chapin Patel, Sam Fitch, Annie Satin and Mandy Satin.  Devyn Howe was in goal and she had 7 saves for a 43.8% save percentage.  The Hornets committed 24 turnovers which is indicative of the first game and many players learning the game.  As in any game, the number of possessions is important and the Hornets were -9.  With Coach Jeff and Coach Katie, this will change!

The JV girls are in action next Wednesday the 26th at home against the Okemos Chiefs.  Rumor has it that at this game Varsity will be first as Okemos has players that must play on both Varsity as well as JV.  Thus JV will play second.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Girls Soccer Preview

The weather is cold, there is still snow, but the Girls soccer season is really heating up.  Last night head coach Dana Restrick and her staff had to make the final cut and this year’s team is now set.  This is always a great time of year as the Varsity Girls Soccer team never disappoints.

When speaking with Coach Restrick it is easy to see how excited she is for the season.  Her face lights up and the passion for her sport is evident.  She is excited for the offense.  She will have numerous attackers that will be able to get the job done and done well.  Among those who will certainly contribute will be Taylor Mulder and Danielle Rathfon.

Coach Restrick’s concern is the defense.  She said that getting people in the right spots and trying different things will be the concern early on as they come together as a team.  She thought if the group could stay healthy, if the group functioned well together, that a successful season could be in the cards.

As always, the Ann Arbor schools (Ann Arbor Pioneer, Ann Arbor Skyline and Ann Arbor Huron) will have good teams.  Coach Restrick went onto to say that she is excited for the game against Dexter as the Dreadnaughts also have a good program.  This is the last year that the SEC will play everyone.  As of now, you play everyone once in the Red and the White Division.  Next year the format will change to you play everyone twice in your Division and cross over against two opponents.

Over spring break the Varsity Girls team will travel to Destin, Florida.  Warm weather!  But this trip albeit fun is an opportunity for the team to build.  Coach Restrick emphasized the importance of the trip for “the team” and how it allowed for the team to really jell.  The Girls also will go through practices and conditioning and given the state of the weather here in Michigan that is a good thing.

The Girls are scheduled to open the season next week on the 26th at Plymouth High School and then come home on the 28th against powerhouse Canton.

Hornets News · Middle School Track Information

With the ever growing popularity of track nationwide and given the success that the high school team has enjoyed, it is no wonder that 150+ kids will run the Saline Middle School this year.  The middle school has put together a coaching staff that many high schools would love to have and The Hornet News sat down today with longtime friend Sandy Stafford to discuss middle school track.

When I asked Sandy to point out an athlete or two that stood out above the rest, she simply said that she could not.  She went on to say, “that are so many great athletes that singling anyone out with inadvertently leave someone out.”  Fair enough and a great problem to have.

Sandy did want The Hornet News to get some important information out as the season will soon be starting.  It is not too late to get out if you are still interested.  Below are list of important dates and some very important links.  If your son or daughter has already in a school (non club) sport, then these forms should have already been completed.

First day of practice is Monday March 31st from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.

The parent information meeting is Wednesday April 2nd at 5:15pm in the middle school cafeteria.

The middle school “Track Website” is here:

There is plenty to keep you busy for a minute or two!  Be sure to keep an eye here on SalineHornets.com for updates or just follow @SHSHornetNews for all of the up to the minute information.  We will pass it along as we have it.

Girls Junior Varsity Water Polo, Girls Varsity Water Polo · Water Polo Preview

Coach Katie Card has high expectations for the Girls Water Polo Team, she also has some concerns.  Water polo is a sport that strength and finesse are important, but if you have speed, the old cliché that “Speed Kills” applies.  When the Hornets had their run from 2006-2010 that yielded back to back State runner ups along with 4 All-Americans, the Hornets were easily the fastest team in the state.  This year’s team will not have those luxuries and this year’s group must focus on being a team.  Katie thought if the team could stay drama free and get better every day as a team, that getting back to the State Championship is an obtainable goal.

The team will be led by senior Hannah Lau and Emily McCullough in the field and Brynn Rohloff in goal.  While as a team the Hornets do not have speed, Hannah Lau is quick and will handle the sprints.  The sprints are incredibly important as this could yield up to four extra possessions per game.  And when playing in tight, tough games, four extra possessions is huge.  Emily McCullough will be called upon to do just about everything as Emily is the team’s most versatile player.  She can swim, she can play “Hole-D”, and given her pedigree, she has a knack for scoring.  Brynn Rohloff will return in goal.  Goaltending has been an Achilles heel for the Hornets even when the Hornets were runners up in 2010.  Sam Crichton was the Hornets last state caliber goalie and Brynn looks to change that.  She has experience and has played year round so if the defense as a team can help their goalie out, this could be a breakout year for Brynn.

Water Polo is very different as to how you advance from Districts to Regionals and eventually the State Playoff.  First, the state of Michigan is divided into the “East” region and the “West” region.  Each region is divided into four districts.  The regular season determines your “seeding” within your district.  Then each year your district will cross over with another district to determine who advances to regionals.  Saline’s district consists of:  Ann Arbor Pioneer; Dexter; Chelsea; and Saline. This year the Hornets draw is the tough draw or the “other” Ann Arbor district.  Easily, the Ann Arbor districts yield the toughest competition and yield the best teams.  The other Ann Arbor district is:  Ann Arbor Huron; Ann Arbor Skyline; Walled Lake; and Grand Blanc.  From here it is simple championship cross over format where your #1 will play the other districts #4.  Your #2 plays their #3.  Your #3 plays their #2 and your #4 plays their #1.  These games are on Friday night.  If you win on Friday night you AUTOMATICALLY advance to regionals.  You can lose both of your games on Saturday and finish 1-2, but you advance to Regionals.  You then reset.  Your region is determined by the seeding obtained at Districts.  You then play against the other region that consisted of the other two districts and in this year’s case that is the Capitol District and the Birmingham/Troy district.  The same applies; your #1 vs their #4, etc.  If you win on Friday night then you AUTOMATICALLY advance to the State Championship and you will take on the West side’s top 4.

The season starts for the Hornets on Tuesday March 18th as they take on the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats. AAH and Coach Justin Thoresen always has a good squad.  This weekend the Hornets will travel to AAP for their Early Bird Tournament and next Thursday the 26th State powerhouse Okemos comes to town which promises to be an early season test for the Hornets. The season should be fun, come on out and support the team!
